چکیده

We present a ray-tracing technique for radiative transfer modeling of complex three-dimensional (3D) structures which include dense regions of high optical depth like in dense molecular clouds, circumstellar disks, envelopes of evolved stars, and dust tori around active galactic nuclei. The corresponding continuum radiative transfer problem is described and the numerical requirements for inverse 3D density and temperature modeling are defined. We introduce a relative intensity and transform the radiative transfer equation along the rays to solve machine precision problems and to relax strong gradients in the source term. For the optically thick regions where common ray-tracers are forced to perform small trace steps, we give two criteria for making use of a simple approximative solver crossing the optically thick region quickly. Using an example of a density structure with optical depth changes of 6 orders of magnitude and sharp temperature

Using Hierarchical Simplicial Meshes to Render Atmospheric Effects

A fundamental element of computer graphics is producing realistic visualizations of various natural phenomena. An important problem in this area is that of rendering scenes containing atmospheric effects, which arise from the absorbtion and scattering of light due to small particles such as dust and smoke. Generating photorealistic renderings through ray-tracing is computationally very demandin...

A GPU Accelerated Volumetric Ray Tracer for Incandescent Gas

[1] lays out a basic algorithm for volumetric ray tracing: it renders a given volume based on local data specified at each voxel within the volume without the use of geometric primitives. In his method, voxels are treated as samples on a continuous function for color/opacity, and the specific values at a point are derived with local operators. Front-to-back eye rays are modeled as vectors of co...

Christian Lauterbach: Interactive Ray Tracing of Massive and Deformable Models. (Under the direction of Dinesh Manocha.) Ray tracing is a fundamental algorithm used for many applications such as computer graphics, geometric simulation, collision detection and line-of-sight computation. Even though the performance of ray tracing algorithms scales with the model complexity, the high memory requir...

Simulating the Effects of Intergalactic Gray Dust.

Using a high-resolution cosmological hydrodynamic simulation, we present a method to constrain extinction due to intergalactic gray dust based on the observed magnitudes of distant Type Ia supernovae. We apply several simple prescriptions to relate the intergalactic dust density to the gas density in the simulation, thereby obtaining dust extinctions that may be directly compared with the obser...

Abstract The ray series method may be generalized using a ray centered coordinate system for general 3D-heterogeneous media.
